The brother makes a bold, but accurate statement! In as much as he is not of American heritage, or was not born here, he is indeed accurate when he says that he is not African American! I also agree because of his Latino birth. However, due to the fact that his heritage is of African decent, he throws the white Americans a most beautiful curve ball, more especially, when they first see the brother. Here is where the mistake is made! The "ASSUMPTION" is, "he is 'African American'. Oh, but let the brother begin to communicate, this is when the "curve ball" hits them up side of the head! This is a good thing!
